February 15- Natural Supplements

After going to the TCM Dr. for a few weeks, I wanted to up the ante and throw into the mix whatever other natural remedies were out there. In sort of a "take no prisoners" attitude, I searched relentlessly to find anything and everything that would fight with me in my battle to reverse POF. Intently digging through every kind of site, from discussion forums to clinical trials, and came up with a steady daily regimen.

Below is a list of everything I take in a day. I have added info for each item taken from multiple sources on the web: (all were approved by both the fertility Dr I saw and my Chinese Medicine Dr, as they are all natural supplements)

ROYAL JELLY (2 tsp- 2x per day)-
Shown to help balance hormones. This makes it beneficial to those individuals that suffer from a hormonal imbalance, as it helps to provide support to the endocrine system. It can also help with problems that are related to hormonal imbalance, such as polycystic ovarian syndrome or irregular menstrual cycles. Some studies have shown that Royal Jelly has the propensity to mimic human estrogen, which can help those that suffer from low estrogen levels. Royal Jelly is rich in amino acids, lipids, sugars, vitamins, and most importantly, proteins. It contains high levels of vitamins D and E, and also has ample levels of iron and calcium. As all of these are essential to proper health and organ function.

L-ARGANINE (1 capsule- 3x per day)-
L-Arginine is an essential amino acid that supports healthy circulation; and often called the miracle molecule by researchers, L-Arginine has shown to offer some supportive fertility benefits to both men and women. More than 10,000 medical citations have been written by researchers investigating the effects of L-Arginine on human fertility. L-Arginine is a precursor to nitric oxide, an important molecule that promotes vasodilation (relaxation of the blood vessels), which is important for healthy blood flow.

CoQ10 (4- 200mg capsules per day)-
Coenzyme Q10 is safe to take and may improve the availability of mitochondrial energy production for the maturing oocyte and developing embryo, thereby reducing the rate of chromosomal nondisjunction and improving implantation in older infertile patients.

DHEA (75 mg per day)-
Improve egg quality/increase ovarian response.

PREGNITUDE (1 packet AM/1 in PM)
Pregnitude is a natural dietary supplement that contains 2 grams of myo-inositol, as well as 200 mcg of folic acid. It helps support ovulatory function, menstrual cyclicity and quality of eggs for women.

MELATONIN (3 mg in dropper before bed)
Melatonin is a hormone that is secreted by the pineal gland. It regulates our sleep/wake cycle as well as other hormones, in particular the hormones of the female reproductive cycle. New studies like the one above suggest that melatonin supplementation at a level of 3 mg per day may help to improve egg quality when taken with MI for several months prior to IVF.

Separate tinctures I mix together (according to suggested dose on bottles) with water and my Chinese Herb prescription:

MACA-
In women, maca works by controlling estrogen in the body. Maca helps to stimulate and nourish the pituitary gland, acting as a tonic for the hormone system. When the pituitary gland functions optimally, the entire endocrine system becomes balanced, because the pituitary gland controls the hormone output of the other three glands.

SHATAVARI-
Shatavari is a Indian herb that is traditionally Ayurvedic. Its main constituent is steroidal saponins, giving rise to the conclusion that Shatavari’s has the ability as an estrogen modulator and may help regulate the menstrual cycle. This herb has adaptogenic and immuno-modulating properties. This means it may be very helpful with women who have stress related or immune-mediated fertility issues. Autoimmune fertility issues may be helped and the proper immnological function supported by Shatavari.

CHASTE TREE (VITEX)-
Vitex supports hormonal balance in the body by having an effect on the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian axis (hormonal feedback loop), correcting the problem at the source. Vitex, also known as chaste tree berry, is usually the first line of defense in a woman who is experiencing irregular periods, helping to regulate the function of the entire communication of the reproductive system.

LICORICE ROOT-
Licorice root may help restore regular ovulation in women who have irregular periods. Licorice root has effects similar to estrogen and progesterone, which may correct hormone imbalances to allow for conception to occur. Only use licorice root in the first half of your menstrual cycle, prior to ovulation. (If you have a menstrual cycle)

RED CLOVER-
Red clover aids in fertility is that it acts similar to estrogen, an essential hormone in the female reproductive process. When red clover is ingested correctly, it contains isoflavones, plant-derived chemicals that seem to produce effects on the body that are similar to the effects of estrogen. Fertility experts say that an estrogen surge causes follicles to get ready for ovulation, until one egg bursts through and ovulation occurs.

BLACK COHOSH-
Black cohosh contains active compounds that have a chemical structure similar to cimicifugoside and actein. Both these compounds are known to have estrogenic activity, making them ideal for females suffering from infertility. Black cohosh also contains resins like cimicifugin, isoferulic acid and caffeic acid that are commonly found in premium health supplements recommended for boosting female reproductive health.

--------------

RED RASPBERRY TEA-
I also drink a cup of red raspberry tea at night which is supposed to help with regulating menstrual cycles. I've seen others post they drink up to 3 cups per day.

WHEAT GRASS-
I so one shot a day in powder form that I get from Whole Foods. I mix it with one of my tincture drinks. It's pretty harsh but I know the phytonutrients are good for me so I tough it out.

Wheatgrass can do everything from lowering FSH to facilitating conception. Wheatgrass is high in magnesium and it is a natural anti-inflamatory. All of these things can help you get pregnant naturally.

I also drink Green Smoothies every morning to start my day and get lots of fruits and green leafy veggies in. But I was doing that anyway. Great site for recipes:
www.incrediblesmoothies.com

Lastly, lately I've been trying to eliminate low-fat dairy as possible, which is not easy considering I've been a vegetarian all my life!

What I've read about it: Failure to ovulate is a common cause of infertility. The Harvard-affiliated study that yielded this stat found this condition strikingly high in women who consumed two or more daily servings of low-fat dairy products.

Studies DO say, however, that whole milk dairy is ok. Just watch for added hormones and go organic.

So... I will continue with this daily regimen in hopes to improve egg quality on the few suckers I have left and to get my ovaries working again!

    1. Bethany,

I used Country Life 25mg DHEA because they are vegetarian capsules. Plus, with them being 25mg each I just popped three a day with no problem. They are tiny pills so they are easy to take. Let me know if you have any other questions!

Best of luck to you!!!!! :-)

    2. Thank you SO much for getting back to me so quickly!! I found your blog via the Fertile Thoughts website. and I have to tell you that I haven't been able to stop reading. I feel so inspired and filled with hope from stories like yours :)

    3. Awww thank you! That really means a lot. When I started the blog it was in hopes of finding inspiration and offering support at the same time. I read many stories from others who had success when they were told they wouldn't and it gave me the hope I needed to keep trying. Now that things ended up the way they have, I want more than anything for people to see that Doctors DON'T know everything, that there IS hope and to never give up! <3

    4. Hi I am 41 and had an FSH of 97.5 and estradiol of <15. I have done acupuncture for a little over a month and used the TCM herbs but they started making me nauseous to my stomach. Do you think the liquid forms of the herbs that you used like shatavari etc could be taken in pill form as well and still work?

  2. Hi Cole, I am 37 yr old woman with FSH 13.8 and AMH 0.17. I was told by the first doctor that my case was hopeless. But i decided to get second opinion. Now i am taking 75mg DHEA, 85 mg aspirin and 600mg of CoQ10 each day. I wanted to add the other medicines as you mentioned in your blog. Although you have given great details and very helpful information, i wanted to ask whether you were taking all of the mentioned medicines each day? Some you mention had to be taken only in first half of the month, but i am not sure if other medicines have the some protocols? It would be fantastic if you could please provide the protocols about when and how long and which ones are to be taken. Also, can all of them can be part of the medication for each day?
    Thanks you so much!!

  3. Good morning! First, I have to say your numbers don't seem that bad! Mine were waaaaay worse when I was diagnosed and then almost exactly where you're at right now when I got pregnant. So I absolutely believe there's hope for you!

Ok so I was adding all the tinctures into my herb mix from the TCM that I had to take 3 times a day. The one mid day I also added a packet of wheat grass and the one at the end of the day I added 3 droppers full of evening primrose oil. I took Pregnitude once in morning and once at night and 3 mg of melatonin at night. I took 800mg of CoQ10, 75 mg of DHEA, prenatals, and DHA each day. I also ate a teaspoon of royal jelly twice per day. I did acupuncture once a week, castor oil packs every other day and self fertility massage every night with almond oil (which I learned from going to a professional once, but couldn't afford more than that). I think that's everything. Whew. It's a lot but it became second nature. Let me know how it goes!!!

In the meantime if you have any other questions, please don't hesitate to ask!!

  4. So I attempted to make my very first green smoothie today and it was so hard to choke down... i think i went a little over board with everything i put in there--spinach, banana, blueberries, raspberries, coconut water, maca and wheat grass and bunch of other vitamins... so i have to ask--what is your favorite green smoothie? All these vitamins are so hard to swallow. How'd you do it? lol :)

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Bethany,

Oh no! No wonder it was so terrible... Ok so with the smoothies you just want to put the greens, water or coconut water and fruit in there. You can also add liquid probiotics and hemp, chia or flax seeds in them. But that's it. Those are supposed to be yummy breakfast drinks! The maca and wheat grass you want to do separate. The maca and other fertility tinctures I would add to my chinese herbs the TCM gave me to mix with water three times per day. Only a little bit of water so it's just a quick swig. I would add a shot of wheat grass to one of those mixtures each day. That way it's only one big gulp of it, rather than an entire drink! No wonder you had a hard time getting it down!

My favorite green smoothie recipes are probably these two:

      1 cup Coconut Water
2 cups Baby Spinach or Bok Choy
      1 cup Frozen Mango
      1 banana
      1 cup Frozen Pineapple
      1 cup Frozen Peaches
      ------------------------------------------
      1 cup Water
      1 Cup Baby Spinach
2 cups Frozen Red Grapes (buy fresh, wash and freeze)
      2 Naval or Blood Oranges
      2 Kiwis

**With all my smoothies I always add 1 tbsp of probiotics and 1 tbsp of hemp seeds for protein but that is optional**

It is a lot of stuff to take, so you have to find a regimen that works for you. I would space everything out throughout the day but I won't lie... it's a pain in the ass. But so worth it if it works! :-)

Let me know if you have any other questions at any time and keep me posted!!

      Delete
    2. Ahhh thank you! :) I thought a green smoothie would be an easy way to get my vitamins in without having to swallow all of them lol I guess there is no easy way out with them hahah oh well... :) My fiancee says he has no idea how I take the amount of vitamins I do. Our kitchen counter is covered with bottles at night when I am putting all of my AM, PM and Before Bed vitamins together for the next day lol. But you are so right! If it works, in the end all of this pain in the ass vitamins and castor oil packs and teas are going to be so worth it! :)

    3. Second smoothie much better!! Thanks for the advice!! I tried out:
      1 cup Spinach
      1 banana
      1 cup coconut water
      1/2 cup blueberries
      1/2 cup raspberries
and just 1 tsp of Maca. So much better!! Thank you! :)

  5. Hi, were you taking an additional prenatal on top of the Pregnitude, or was that your only prenatal?

I take a prenatal AND an additional folic supp, so I am concerned that the EXTRA folic in Pregnitude may mess me up more than help... That being said I DO have MTHFR so I need all the folic acid I can get... I think. I have a good, positive RE but he's very hard to reach for questions so I try and add them all up for a week and hit him up at one time. He's also never once recommended anything more than a prenatal, but when asked if I can add some of the supps I had read about before your blog he seemed to know them and said they were fine to take (with exception of DHEA which I have to stop when we start to stim). Thank you so much!!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Yes, I was taking an additional prenatal. It's the same one I am still taking, which is made by RAW. I was also eating Wheat Germ by the spoonful which naturally has folic acid in it.

As for the doctors recommending supplements... they only know what they know so I think they play it safe when it comes to telling you what to take. With all the doctors I saw, none of them recommended me taking any of the supplements I was using and one of them even told me if I stayed with him he would make me stop seeing my TCM! So glad I didn't listen to him!

      Btw... what is MTHFR?

      Delete
    2. Thanks! That's good to know! I will go ahead and order that on Friday. Thanks for the info. I also feel better hearing that your doc didn't prescribe any of the supps. I was starting to doubt my guy and I really don't want to doubt him since he seems to positive and upbeat about my odds. As I said, the only one he was concerned about was the DHEA and there he only asked me to stop before we stim.

MTHFR is a clotting disorder. http://www.stephenwellsmd.com/mthfr.htm

    1. I started taking all the other stuff around the same time that I first went to my TCM. I told her about all the stuff I got to take and she had heard of most of it. Said they were all good things to try! So I started mixing all the tinctures in with my TCM drink three times a day (otherwise that was a LOT of drinks to make total) and it ensured I remembered to take everything each day. :-)

  7. Hello-
Thanks so much for your blog. It is so nice to see the nitty gritty you know? I was just told I have POF this week. My numbers are very poor and I am only 29. FSH was 60 and 40, LH was 28.5, and AMH was .1 and Estradiol was 40.5 (I never saw your AMH numbers did they do that test?)

They pretty much said I need a donor. BUT I have two children (4 and 1.5 both boys) and we did not have trouble conceiving them. I got pregnant in February but miscarried with MANY complications. Then had crazy hormone symptoms and that is what started the testing. I know I am luck to have two children already but I always wanted a large family so it is still very devastating (Secondary Infertility is what it is called I guess).

I have a few questions. Do you see the TCM doctor often? I live in the middle of nowhere Wyoming so I would need to drive about 3 hours to even get to one! The same with an RE. So I was just wondering what you did.

Also how much do you think you spend each month in the supplements? Definitely less than IVF :)

I am so excited for you to have TWINS you are truly blessed and an inspiration to me!

    1. Carissa,

Thank you so very much for writing! It means the world to me to hear that I've inspired you. Reading other people's success stories was the only thing that kept me going after my diagnosis.

I am so sorry you have to go through this. Your numbers don't seem too terribly bad. Your FSH is less than half of what mine was, so that is in your favor! As for AMH, mine was <0.16, which is similar to yours. But... all it takes is ONE GOOD EGG!

Wow, that has to be hard living in the middle of nowhere like that! Although I have heard Wyoming is breathtakingly beautiful. The TCM I saw once per week for acupuncture and the herbs she gave me would last about 3 weeks at a time. What area in Wyoming are you in? I could help research and see if I can come up with any TCMs that are closer...

With the supplements I was spending a lot. Luckily I found some good sources where I can get deals on most of the things I was taking. I actually just put together a basket of most of the supplements I was taking and mailed it to a fellow reader who is going through POF also. I figured since I can get it at a better rate that I could help others by putting together a little basket of the stuff I was taking to make it easier on them financially and in having to seek out all the stuff. I was able to do this for about $50 plus shipping. The basket contained the following:

      -Royal Jelly
-Castor Oil and Wool Flannel to use with it
      -Wheat Grass packets
      -Melatonin
      -DHEA
      -CoQ10
      -L-Arganine
      -The following tinctures:
      -Liquorice
      -Maca
      -Female Libido Tonic (Shatavari)
      -Chaste Tree
      -Red Clover

I could do the same for you if you are interested. Just drop me a line via email and we'll chat. (coleyhay@gmail.com)

Thank you for the well-wishes about the twins. I am still freaking out about it. Can't believe it! I truly believe it was all the alternative stuff I was doing that turned things around for me because it's all stuff I heard about from others online with success stories and four doctors told me there was nothing in the western medical world that could be done about it. So it just goes to show that doctors don't know everything!

Keep on fighting the fight! Sending positive vibes your way!!

      Cole

    2. Could you send me the items as well? Also, what are the additional items that would need to purchase like pregnitude, prenatal, etc. that are not included in the basket? And do you have a video that shows how to do the fertility massage?

  8. Congratulations Coley, and thanks for sharing your inspirational story. I was diagnose POF on May 2013 and still looking for way to reverse my diagnose. Your story gave me hope even though I have lower AMH than you had. I had less than 0.03. Once gain I found your blog time I was feeling down and gave me hope thanks God I found you. I start taken DHEA, CQ10 and vitex on June 5th and stopped about 10 day, and get back on and I am still take since then. And I add Royal jelly, maca powder kind, and black cohosh now.

    1. Thank you for writing. I am glad my story has been inspirational to you. I am sorry to hear your AMH is low, but remember... all it takes is ONE GOOD EGG! Have a wonderful weekend,

Thank you. So glad to hear I have given you hope! Hearing other people's success stories are what gave me the strength to keep on fighting while I was going through it. Yes, I still put baskets together for people because I can get the supplements at cost. I can usually get all of them (except the chinese herbs and pregnitude) for $50 plus shipping (which has been around $15-18 in the states depending on where it's going). If you are interested, you can write me on my email - coleyhay@gmail.com

  12. Congrats Cole I saw you had the twins. Hope they grow to be happy and healthy. Last time I wrote to you was September 3rd. I was asking you about the infertility clinic. Now I want to tell you that I get pregnant naturally. hope this gives more hope to other lady with POF. To make long story short I get my period back on September 22nd and had a lab done third day of my period my AMH increase from less than 0.03 to 0.17. I surprised I did not know AMH can go up and My FSH went down from 39 to 3.5 steroidal went up to 97. And I had ultrasound too and they told me I have two follicles growing on one of my uterus. I miss my period on October I just assume is because of POF. I just found out that I am 3 weeks pregnant. I maybe pregnant with twins

  19. @Anonymous: first take a deep breath. It's ok to panic, we all did the first moment we learned what is happening to our bodies. If you are not ready to talk to your husband is there someone you can confide in? Like your mom, sister? Also, you still are very young, you have time.

You are absolutely right: Stress, poor diet, lack of exercise all contribute to this. You MUST work on these things, there is no way around it. At the very least, they will help you manage your stress and make your body feel good.

Take everything one step at a time. Good luck!

  27. I am 47 and want to have children.
Just recently got married last year and so I just started to try to conceive.
Went to fertility clinic.they said due to my age, the only thing they can offer is donat eggs in vitro. They do not even test me or my husband first and do not even offer using my own eggs.
I am not too happy about that and I get discouraged . Even though I am 47, I don't feel or look that age.
I read a lot about maca helps fertility so I started to take it a month ago . This month, my cycle got crazy. I experienced mid cycle bleeding .
My cycle usually very normal at 28 days with ovulation on day 14. But yet this is day 15 I still have not ovulated. I track my temperature also.no sign of ovulation.
Can Maca mess up my cycle .
    Any advice ???

    1. Hi... I honestly don't know the answer to that. I wasn't having any cycles so it was a bit different for me. My suggestion would be to google your question to see if you find anything out there to help answer it. Sorry I couldn't be any help!

  28. Jeannette,

My story is a little more complicated. It was tested in November 2014 and my AMH was 0.03 and FSH was 34.4. Then they retest me again in 2/2015 AMH went up to 55 and AMH still 0.03. Recently I have started to have pretty normal cycles and they redo the test in March FSH came to 12.3 and yet they did again on Cycle day 3 here are my test results: FSH 3.7, LH = 15.6, Progesterone 0.7, and Estradio = 196. I am so confused the doctor has given me diminished ovarian reserved , premature ovarian failure, premature menopause and all this other B.S. Give the fact my numbers keep on changing what do you suggest I do or try! In addition to all of this my husband has obstructive azoospermia!! Please HELP!!!

  40. Hi, can these herbs still work if I am on birth control. I was told I need to be on it to control my cysts from growing. I have one remaining ovary left and was diagnosed with POF last week. I'm not ready to get pregnant, but don't want my remaining ovary to quit. So, will this work on birth control? Thank you!

  44. Myself and my husband had been trying to get pregnant for 18 months before I was referred to Native Iyabasira fertility solution. We had no definite diagnosis of what was wrong and had become very frustrated. In November 2015 I was given a thorough reproductive health work up, I found out I had low progesterone, thyroid issues and a stomach issue which was affecting my ability to get pregant. This was a very thorough process involving dietary, hormonal and physical investigations and started the recommended treatments in Feb 16 2016. I was pregnant by april 16. I had a baby boy in march 2017. I was carefully monitored and mother Iyabasira was always available for me. I can recommend native iyabasira more highly so much so we are hoping to start trying for a second baby under her guidance.

  46. Hi~ Thank you for all the resources!!

Could you please mention at least which TCM herbs you were taking? I have been having such a hard time finding a TCM practitioner locally who seems to really know about infertility treatments :( just the herb names you were getting?

Also, you said you added the other herbs/tinctures to your TCM drinks 3x/day....so all the herbs/tinctures you also took 3x/day? Were the doses all supposed to be for 3x/day? And did you make the tinctures yourself or buy pre-made drops?

    Thank you!!!!

  52. My name is Kimberly Nicholas from Sydney,I never believed in love spells or magic until i met this spell caster once when i went to Africa in February this year on a business summit. I meant a man who’s name is (Great Matatan powerful Spell ), he is really powerful and could help cast spells to bring back one’s gone, lost, misbehaving lover and magic money spell or spell for a good job or luck spell .I’m now happy & a living testimony cos the man i had wanted to marry left me 3 weeks before our wedding and my life was upside down cos our relationship has been on for 4 years. I really loved him, but his mother was against us and he had no good paying job. So when i met this spell caster, i told him what happened and explained the situation of things to him. At first i was undecided, skeptical and doubtful, but i just gave it a try. And in 7 days when i returned to Sydney, my boyfriend (now husband) called me by himself and came to me apologizing that everything had been settled with his mom and family and he got a new job interview so we should get married. I didn’t believe it cos the spell caster only asked for my name and my boyfriends name and all i wanted him to do. Well we are happily married now and we are expecting our little kid, and my husband also got the new job and our lives became much better. His email is:(  matatanspell@yahoo.com .  )
